I have spent part of the day learning more about lighting and composition in food photography. There is so much to learn and know that it is overwhelming. Today as I sat reading 1/10000000000000 of the tips and tricks to photography, I was tempted to think small with a ‘I’ll never be able to do this well’. Then another thought came to mind. Why don’t I just play around with lighting on tangerines and boiled eggs. I can definitely do that. I am learning that photography requires patience and humility. No matter how much you know…there is still more to learn. Here is some of my playing around. If you want to know what I am reading, go to the links provided under Food Photography on this site..

This is the set up. The box is where we hold our coffee spoons.
An egg with cool lighting.
An egg with warmer light.
I had wanted a nice medium boiled egg but I was distracted and ended up with a hard boiled egg with a very faded yolk. It didn’t look too appetizing.
Playing with lighting again.
More orangy oranges..
Playing with the 105mm.
My attempt a really close up. I am hoping soon to get another photoshop program besides the iphoto one that came with the computer.
I have never photographed food before but at least the subject stays still! I use photoshop cs3 but elements works just as well and it is a little more user friendly, even easier is photoshop lightroom and it is a better price!
Thanks Heidi,
I just got Lightroom about an hour ago. Now if I thought I was overwhelmed before….I just make some of the oranges more orange with LR tell me what you think?
Solid BJ, you’re doing some really good stuff! Food photography is actually much harder than people think, I suck at it! But you’re defiantly on the right track, Composition and lighting are key elements for food. Also, it sounds like you have the right lens for the job (105mm… macro?)so you’re set. Be patient, it will pay off.
ps: I use lightroom all the time, so if you get stuff feel free to ask
Thanks Adam, I just got LR and am learning how to use it. I will definitely take you up on your kind offer!!
