Food photography is actually much harder than people think, I suck at it! But you're defiantly on the right track, Composition and lighting are key elements for food. Also, it sounds like you have the right lens for the job (105mm... macro?)so you're set. I use photoshop cs3 but elements works just as well and it is a little more user friendly, even easier is photoshop lightroom and it is a better price!
