I often wonder what to put in the kids lunches. Things can get old very fast. When did we North Americans decide that sandwiches were the only choice for lunches everyday? Our friend visiting from Columbia was surprised when she saw me packing the typical brown bag lunch everyday. Where she lives, the kids go home from school for a big hearty meal, sandwiches are unheard of. She also said that lunch is the main meal and dinner is light. Hmmm, I am not an expert but that seems healthier than loading yourself down at 7pm with a roast beef dinner.
All of this to say, that although the sandwich is tasty and worthy of respect, it does not corner the market on lunch.
Lately, I have been using a thermos more often than not, as well as a bento box with different containers for different foods. My kids love rice, so I have been making a big pot of sticky rice in the morning and rolling up these rice balls. These ones I sprinkled with black sesame seeds but I also will send them with some seaweed to wrap around the rice. I know this is such a basic small step but sometimes we just need to imagine another way of doing things. Oh and I ordered two of these swanky bento boxes from Laptop Lunches. This site also has some cool ideas for lunch. You can also check out Just Bento.

I know right? My kids love them. It is great when you can imagine something more interesting for lunches than sandwiches.

and thanks for your blog too!!
Two of my daughter’s friends at kindergarten told her that seaweed was stinky and they don’t want her to bring it any more. Sad face.
Otherwise, hurrah for these beautiful lunch ideas!!!!! I always love packing food and snacks up.
Aw, that’s too bad!
