Better Eating Through Technology
As the first smart phone of its kind, the iPhone has been a trend setter when it comes to mobile networking, productivity and interaction. It’s a great phone as well as a great web browsing device, but the real action is in the many handy applications and utilities available through the App Store. For all you gourmands and food lovers out there, here are five applications you can’t live without.
Yelp
Let’s start with the obvious and get it out of the way. Yelp is one of the most popular peer-review websites on the web for rating local businesses, particularly restaurants. This free app helps you find great eateries in your local neighborhood or in any city. You can get the low-down on what other people are saying about an establishment’s food and service, as well as ballpark figures on price and wait times.
OpenTable
Here’s another freebie for those who dine out frequently and enjoy a healthy nightlife. OpenTable allows you to search through an update database of restaurants in any given area to see whether they’re booked or not, how long the wait is, as well as they’re availability for larger parties. The neat thing is you can also book reservations with it in a snap, and earn free meal points by registering on their website.
Calorie Tracker
Brought to you by the fine folks at Livestrong.com, this is the perfect app for those who are watching their weight or just trying to eat healthy. For $2.99, you can easily monitor and track how much you’re packing away thanks to their extremely comprehensive database of 525,000 entries. If it’s served in the Western Hemisphere, they’ve probably got what you’re eating indexed so you can eat smart.
Pocket Cocktails Drinks & Wine
Nothing enhances a meal or the experience of dining out with friends and loved ones like a classic cocktail. Pocket Cocktails gives you thousands of options to help you pick the right one based on your spirit preference. Chock-full of handy information about all manner of mixed drinks, beer and wine. Sort of like having a sommelier in your phone. It’s definitely worth it for only $0.99.
Urban Spoon
Somewhat like Yelp, but with more of a “restaurant decider” type app for figuring out where to go based on what you’re in the mood for. You can choose from diverse categories like Thai or Greek and see what’s available nearby. So whether it’s a hot dog your after or a seven course feast, you’ll be able to find it. Urban Spoon is available in almost every major city and at $2.99, it’s a great value to boot.
These apps barely scrape the surface of what’s available and there are easily hundreds more like them available through the App Store to suit any need. But any self-respecting foodie would be well served to have these essentials on their iPhone for the next time they decide to step out for a bite.
